Wikipedia as an Academic Resource

Generally, Wikipedia should not be cited as a source in academic work.

Wikipedia is an excellent starting point for research, however since anyone can edit any article at any time, all information found within Wikipedia should be verified by using a credible source and the credible source should be cited rather than Wikipedia.

Sometimes credible sources can be found in the list of references at the end of most Wikipedia articles.

Wikipedia is also an excellent starting point for finding and researching images. Clicking on an image within Wikipedia will lead you to a page of information about the image including some or all of the following:

  • Copyright status
  • Artist information
  • Title
  • Year created
  • Technique
  • Dimensions
  • Current location

Image information should be verified before it is used. You may be able to verify information about a work of art by visiting the website of the work's current location. For information about determining if a work is in the public domain go here: Image Use & Copyright
