This is Paolo Uccello's interpretation of a scene from the legend of Saint George and the dragon.
According to the legend, a small village was terrorized by a great dragon who required the sacrifice of one maiden per day. Saint George happened upon the village on the day that the princess was to be sacrificed.
He wounded the dragon and the princess subdued it by tying her belt around its neck, which is the scene shown in the painting. She then led the dragon back to the village where Saint George chopped off its head.
