Three Main Types of Liquid Diets

Liquid DietIf you’re considering a liquid diet weight loss plan, chances are you’re sort of desperate by this point.  You’ve likely tried everything else and nothing seems to work. Before I get into the three different types of liquid diets to help you lose weight, I feel obligated to tell you that you need to see your doctor prior to starting any of these plans.  Using a liquid diet weight loss plan is an extremely radical approach to weight loss, so please make sure you take all the necessary precautions.

Liquid Diet Weight Loss Plan Number One – The Water Fast
Water fasting has been around for thousands of years.  It’s used a lot in religious rituals, and for many reasons other than weight loss.  I’ll focus on the weight loss part and leave the controversial stuff to someone else.

Like any diet, water fasting helps you lose weight by reducing the amount of calories you take in.  In this case calories are reduced to zero, which is why rapid weight loss is usually seen when water fasting.  But don’t think you’ve found the magic bullet just yet…

The Pros and Cons of Water Fasting
The best thing about water fasting is that if you can make it past about day three, you will not be hungry because your body has entered starvation mode.  This is actually true with any liquid diet weight loss plan, but it’s especially true when water fasting.  You are literally starving yourself because you are getting zero calories or nutrition of any kind.  The rapid weight loss is nice as well.  And actually a lot of people report feeling quite good when water fasting once they get past day 3 or 4.  But it’s not all roses either…

The downside of using this approach is that during those first few days you will likely feel the following:

  • Hungry
  • Light Headed
  • Dizziness
  • You will probably get a headache
  • You will probably feel extremely tired

But as mentioned earlier, if you can get past all of that, then water fasting is a good short term solution for a liquid diet weight loss plan. Remember to see your doctor before starting such a radical approach.

Liquid Diet Weight Loss Plan Number Two – The Juice Fast
A juice fast, like its name suggests replaces the water with juice so you’re getting some nutrition and a few calories.  That’s a good thing actually.  Why, because you can typically stay on them longer than a water fast without feeling terrible. People have been known to go on a juice fast for over 60 days and be perfectly healthy doing so.  Again, it’s critical that you check with your doctor if this would be right for you or not.

Now using a juice fast a liquid diet weight loss plan takes a little more effort than a water fast. You can’t just go to the store and buy apple juice for your fast.  There is way too much sugar, and preservatives.  So, if you’re going to do a juice fast, you’ll be making your own juice.

That means you’ll be buying a ton of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a juicer.  And if you plan on fasting for any length of time, you’ll probably want a good one.

So while a juice fast does have some advantages over a water fast, it is going to require more effort on your part.

Liquid Diet Weight Loss Plan Number Three – The Meal Replacement Shake
Meal replacement shakes such as Medi-fast or even a protein shake are generally what people think of when they think of using a liquid diet for weight loss.  They work very similar to any of the other liquid diet weight loss plans.  They restrict calories to very low level.

The good news about meal replacement shake is that they typically have a little more nutrition than even juice fasting.  Like juice fasting you can stay on them for much longer periods of time than a water fast.  They are also generally accepted by doctors as a proper way to lose weight if all else has failed. There have been many studies done on these types liquid diet weight loss plans, so most doctors are more familiar with them instead of a juice fast or water fast.

The Question Everyone Really Wants Answered
How much weight will I lose using liquid diet weight loss plans?  In the early stages, you will likely lose 5-10 pounds per week.  Much of this will be water weight, so don’t get too excited.  After a while the weight loss will slow to 2-3 pounds a week as your body adjusts.  The real answer though is it depends on you.  Will you have the will power to stay on the liquid diet weight loss plan for long enough to see any real results?
