Modern Art
Sites listed in this category display or provide information about visual artwork created in the 1880's up until the 1970's, or they may be contemporary artists imitating a very distinctive style from this period. This category will also list sites concerned with Modernism which is closely related to modern art.
Some important modern art movements include Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Cubism, Abstract Art, Pop Art and Op Art. These movements have many characteristics such as visible brush strokes, abstracted forms, unrealistic colors, simple shapes as subject matter, using non-traditional methods or materials, and expressing inner feelings and visions in an innovative way instead of literally representing a subject.
The term Contemporary Art usually refers to artwork from our present time, around the 1960's up until today, and is not interchangeable with the term modern art.
A few representative artists: Paul Cezanne "The Father of Modernism", Edouard Manet, Claude Monet
