I Believe In Faeries
Short Story
by Hayley Foster
I have always believed in faeries. When I was a child, I used
to follow dandelion clocks believing that they were faeries. I was
curious as to who they were, and of course what they really looked like. I
have never really seen faeries up until recent months. At nineteen
years old, I know a lot of people will see me as being silly, seeing things
that aren’t really there. But I now see them almost every day, and some
of the things that have happened to me since I started to try and
communicate with the little people are much more coincidence.
At first, I saw them from the corner of my eye occasionally. However,
this grew more and more often. I was so curious I started to research
all I could. There was so much information to be found, and I was pleased
to discover there were others out there like me who believed in them
and some that had seen them too. Many people described them the same way,
like colourful orbs floating in the sky. Some people have even seen
them in their most well known form, beautiful people with sparkly wings.
There are many types of faeries, but I believe what I can see are nature
spirits. I say this because I see them more often outdoors,
particularly in parks and woods.
Soon after my research had began, things started to happen. I had
borrowed a book from the library about them, and a few days later the book
had disappeared from the spot I had left it. I searched the whole flat
to no avail. I started to feel disillusioned; thinking the faeries
didn’t want me to learn about them. I shared my fears with like-minded
people on a website I regularly visit. They reminded me that faeries are
very mischievous and like to play tricks. One of the other members
suggested I find another book to replace it with, and then the book would be
returned. Taking her advice, I returned to the library and managed to
find another book about faeries. To my delight, the book turned up the
next day in the very place I had left it originally. What took me even
more by surprise, was that the new book was much more informative and
useful than the original book. It was as if the faeries had led me to the
right book. My faith was renewed.
The second coincidence that happened to me was while I was in the local
park. Having had found out that willow trees were filled with faery
energy, I went over to one I was particularly drawn to. I studied it
carefully, admiring its beauty and structure. I decided to check the trunk
of the tree. A piece of bark had fell off, underneath where the bark
would have been was a small pink glittery flower shape. I took this down
as a symbol of my connection to the faeries. I just knew I was meant to
find the gift.
I regularly practice magick, and have recently begun to use faeries in
my work. A few weeks ago, I did a specific ritual in which I put a
small spoonful of honey and some coins in an envelope. I wrote “To The
faeries” on the front and dropped it somewhere in my garden where I had
seen them on a regular basis. I asked them to accept my gift in return to
bring me some inspiration to write again. Within days, I found myself
at WH Smiths buying a notepad so I could start writing a story in my
lunch break. I have also managed to write a few poems and my dream to be a
writer seems to be on the right track again. I would recommend working
with faeries to anyone, as long as they do some research first. After
this experience, I will be calling on them more often.
