Ghost on the Stairs
Dream
by Gratian Summerland
I am sleeping outside on the lawn where I went to grade school, I was so tired and it felt good to sleep and sleep...two men came out of the office, woke me up and told me that I could come into the gym for drinks and roller skating. Sounded good so I went in, my sister was there and we were having a good time, then someone told us that there were ghosts upstairs, (which is strange because the school didn't have an upstairs).
In any case I was anxious to see the ghosts so I went through the hallway that led out of the gym and found the stairs, when I got to the top of the stairs I found myself frozen in place, kneeling and no part of my body could move, one half of my face was covered with a yellow-white cloth that continued to drape down around the rest of my body. The one eye that was exposed appeared to be an empty black socket, but if you peered into it, it was like looking through a telescope deep into space, far off you could see tiny swirling galaxies. Though my good eye was covered, somehow I could see a man standing on the stairs, he was older and unremarkable looking, obviously frightened and ready to run but I think he might also have been frozen.
I wondered why a ghost would be so frightened of me and I thought maybe I might be the one who was the "ghost", I also thought maybe I had left my body and appeared somewhere where I shouldn't be. With a great, concentrated effort I was able to speak through my clenched and frozen teeth, I said to him in a deep, gravelly voice that was not my own, "Why arrrre yooou heeere?" My own voice actually woke me up as I said this out loud in my sleep, I had just enough time to watch the man's eyes roll wildly in his head, he looked past me and answered that he was here to see the people that stood behind me. Then I woke up.
